The next step in the campaign to protect Bartow County kids from sexually explicit books and graphic novels continues tonight. Please come to the Bartow County School Board meeting tonight to let the school board members know: “Enough is Enough”!

Below is a timeline of the careful and progressive efforts to have the school system and School Board remove these books beginning in September of 2023.

Please email the board to have obscene and sexually explicit books removed (See footnote 1 below for instructions¹)

The entire effort to reveal and remove sexually explicit books has been met by obstructionism by the School Board and system. It started with them telling the public to search a dozen school websites by individual book title, (instead of providing a list of books). Then delay and bureaucracy to an open record request to produce a complete list of books - a list that was intentionally “locked” by the school board so it could not be searched electronically. Then School Superintendent Dr. Page did not reveal findings to the School Board and tried to conceal them from the public. This was followed by a cat and mouse game by the school board and school system to claim books were removed that remained on the shelves.

At no point has there been a public acknowledgement of a need to remove these books or any problem. Thankfully, due to the persistence of citizens of Bartow through the Bartow Freedom Coalition, books were removed. But far too many were retained.

Over the last month the school system and a majority of School Board members have been distracting from the central issue of the books and casting aspersions on those who seek to simply expose the problem and have books removed. They offer that citizens should “trust the process”.

Well, “The Process” has resulted in sexually explicit books being intentionally retained and even “RECOMMENDED” and "SUGGESTED” to teens (see links below and in last week’s series).

The time is here for citizens to show up in even larger numbers to let the school board know that these sexually explicit books must be removed.

4/8-4/12: Series on Explicit Books intentionally Retained, Calls for Action

Public Comments from a Majority of School Board Members made it clear that they would defend “The Process” and the “Experts” at the School Board that had allowed sexually explicit books to be retained and even recommended and suggested to teenagers for consumption.

The outrageous books were revealed in further detail.

3/8-3/13. Citizens Press the Issue at the School Board; Intentionally Retained Books Further Revealed.

Citizens joined Dr. McKalip at the 3/18/2024 Bartow School Board Meeting to demand that obscene and sexually explicit books be removed from the Bartow School System.

Others sent emails to the School Board demanding the same.

2/23-2/26: The Clean Libraries Act to the Rescue? NOT SO FAST!

• Bartow Senator Ed Setzler Tries to protect Kids.

• Senator Hufstetler lets down Bartow Kids.

Fortuitously, Southeast Bartow Senator Ed Setzler co-sponsored the “Clean Libraries Act” which passed a State Senate Committee Overwhelmingly.

Senator Hufstetler (much of Bartow) would not make it a priority in the rules committee and did not use his option as a committee member to get it to the Senate Floor for a vote. The bill will come up next year (2025) and must pass then.

2/16-2/19: Going Public with the Fight to Protect Kids; Intentionally Retained Sexually Explicit Books Revealed to Public.

A book analysis was presented privately to Superintendent Dr. Page and Future Superintendent Clint Terza on 1/2/24. A follow-up meeting occurred on 2/7. It was clear that the insiders were trying to hide information from the School Board. They were also justifying keeping sexually explicit material on the shelves based on “expert” opinion from their staff.

Only public action would have any chance of working to remove these books to protect kids. It was time to take things to the next level.

“Based on this analysis, School System staff agreed to meet with the Blog founder, Dr. David McKalip. Assurances were made that these concerns would be taken seriously and addressed.

9/12-10/5: Early efforts to Reveal the Truth about Books in Bartow Schools

Attempts to get release of books were met with intense resistance and games. Opacity, rather than transparency was the rule.

As is typical, there will never be easy access given to the truth by large, bureaucratic systems with something to hide.
