Pornographic and Obscene Books at Bartow County Schools
Bartow County School System Decides to Keep them on the shelves.
There are multiple overtly pornographic and obscene books currently on the shelves in the Bartow School system. After months of work to try to get them removed by administration, it is now clear that it is time to notify the public. Today, I will reveal one such concerning book, one celebrated by many as appropriate and important as “literature” for kids to have in their hands. This books is in classrooms, including as “classroom copies” in Bartow Schools. It is used by teachers in instruction. There are even teacher resources available online to help teachers use this book to analyze it as “literature”. Are there are no other titles of “literature” that can be used in our classrooms than this obscene book?
The time is now for parents and community members to start demanding that the Bartow County School Board and Superintendent Page remove obscene, pornographic and age-inappropriate books from Bartow County School. Stay tuned here for the evidence.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is sold as a coming of age story and relates how a teenager is caught up in sexual situations. It also relates teenage sexual activity, including homosexual interactions. The book has highly graphic sex scenes as well as depictions of drug use. (DETAILS BELOW) This book was recently at the top of a stack of books for a swearing in ceremony of leftist activist School Board member in Fairfax County Virginia. That school board member, rather than swearing in on a Bible, swore in on the books that included Perks of Being a Wallflower, Gender Queer, Lawn Boy, All Boys Aren’t Blue and Flamer. This ostensibly was done as a protest for the fact that these books have been removed from schools in Florida and elsewhere.

Perks Excerpts
The book contains graphic scenes of sexual behavior. There are description of drug use. The excerpts below were taken from a book review site called “Rated Books”. I have censored these for this blog. However, the full set of concerning excerpts of this books is located here. Only those over 18 should access this link. It will be the policy of this blog to not post obscene and pornographic material directly. I have worked hard to try to avoid exposing this personally, but now is the time for the community to see for themselves what the children are given to read and are being TAUGHT in the Bartow County School System.
Now some will offer that these are “cautionary tales” designed to help kids avoid these situations. I don’t buy that and neither should anyone with common sense.
The question we need to answer as a community and as parents is this: SHOULD SCHOOLS BE IN THE POSITION OF DETERMINING WHAT SORT OF SEXUALY EXPLICIT MATERIAL CHILDREN SHOULD READ? (The answer is “No” as that is the role of parents and guardians, and NOT the schools!)

Background on the process
Since last fall I have been examining books in the libraries and class rooms at the Bartow County School System. In order to try to get this problem solved directly by the administration, I worked to ensure they were notified of books of concern and evaluate them for removal. The findings of the review are now presented to the public since the school system has made a conscious decision to retain many pornographic books and has still not provided answers on many as to their plans for them.
I was afforded an opportunity to have two private meetings with District Superintendent Page and upcoming Superintendent Clint Terza who will replace Page at the end of the school year. They were willing to hear a detailed presentation and launch investigations. They have discovered that some of the books had never been placed on the school shelves even though they were listed in a lengthy document as being in the libraries after a public information request. I personally checked each of the books against the school library website search engines to determine that most of them were listed as being available. There were many books that they agreed were inappropriate for the schools and some of the actions they took after words were appropriate. Other were not.
But it is clear that there are purely subjective determinations being made about keeping many of these books on the shelves. There are committees, experts and specialists making decisions. The parents are largely uninformed of what sort of offensive materials the students are checking out and there are no parental warnings given as of this writing. The school does not share information with the parents actively. However, there maybe some parental warnings coming based on my conversations with these administrators.
However, not even the School Board members were given the list of books I found or my findings on them. I ultimately provided that to them myself over the last week after it was clear to me that Superintendent Page had no intention of doing so.
As this series continues, you will need to decide this: Will you act or do nothing?
David McKalip, M.D.
We are going to remove the people who are allowing it to let this happen. Doesn't the school board have the authority to remove these books?
Isn't it a "subjective determination" that they should be removed?
